July is Cleft and Craniofacial awareness month!

Our specialist orthodontist, Dr. Kleio Palaska, has gained extensive knowledge and expertise in orthodontics for children with cleft lip and palate during her cleft/craniofacial fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Cleft lip and/or palate is one of the most common congenital conditions affecting the craniofacial structures. The global average incidence is approximately one in every 700 newborns. The treatment of this condition involves a multidisciplinary approach by different specialists such as plastic/maxillofacial surgeon, pediatrician, orthodontist, pediatric dentist, audiologist, radiologist, geneticist, neurologist/neurosurgeon, ENT doctor, psychologist, social worker and speech therapist.

The craniofacial orthodontist has a critical role during the care of individuals with cleft lip and/or palate as he or she is involved with these patients from birth to adulthood. Pre-surgical infant orthopedics, orthodontic preparation for the alveolar bone graft (ABG), early phase of orthodontic treatment after ABG, and comprehensive orthodontic treatment associated with or without orthognathic surgery should be provided by the orthodontist in different developmental stages for these patients.

If you have any concerns or further enquiries regarding this or any other orthodontic condition, please book in to see Dr Kleio who will be happy to guide you and provide you with the best possible treatment.
